Building The Ultimate Survival/Preppers List
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:15:17 AM »
Ok fellas, I am working on building the ultimate preppers/survivalist list which will be posted on ODT once complete. What I am looking for are a list of categories and items that would need to be thought of. So far here is what I am coming up with. Some of the items will naturally fit into more than one category:

Shelter: Hand tools, tarps, lumber, chain saw, gas, hand saw, 550 cord, rope,

Security: Guns, ammo, non electronic alarms, knives, knife sharpeners, bows & arrows

Personal Hygiene: Fingernail clippers, soap, baby wipes, shampoo,

Communication: Two way radios, paper, penciles, pens,

Food: Dehydrated foods, freeze dried foods, canned goods, fishing equipment,

Education: Books on wild edibles, books on medicines,

Transportation: Cars, trucks, motorcycles, atv's, horse's, and such with gear

Water: Iodine tablets, UV purifier, water purification pump,

Please feel free to add anything else you can come up with, to include categories that I know I am missing. Once it's done, I will be editing so we can actually read it, than I will be creating a PDF file that will be posted here for all members to copy and keep.

How about Gun cleaning kits? I have not seen them listed or talked about in the prepper show's. Do you think these items would be good to have?

Your list makes no mention of economic matters - how you will earn a living after TEOTWAWKI.

Every group will have to have a very good reason why their neighbours should not shoot them and take their supplies. One of the best ways is to have useful trade skills and materials that are not very common pre collapse but very much in demand after collapse. Medic skills will always come top, but if you are not so blessed you need to find a trade that most folks can readily learn.

As an example ... footwear. When there are no cars and public transport folks are going to have to walk a great deal - hundreds of times more foot mileage - flimsy fashion shoes will be worn out in a week. The choice will be to walk barefoot or source some strong boots that might not fit well  or repair the sturdiest of your worn out shoes that do fit you well. They will seek out someone to solve their problem.

If you had acquired manpower driven shoe repair machines, loads of sharp tools, huge supplies of threads and ultra strong filaments, nails, glues, plus a source of repair materials like leather or tarpaulin or tyres ... then you could be useful enough to society to leave alive. Foragers could collect sturdy footwear and trade it to you - and you could help to shod some of the hordes to encourage them to quickly pass by your defended retreat.

Items such as extra bands for the slingshot should be powdered and vacuum packed to keep them from dry rot.  There are probably a lot of other things in our stash that should be treated similarly.
